A website can look sharp, load quickly, and still shut out a customer at the worst possible moment. If a visitor cannot use the navigation without a mouse, read key content with a screen reader, or submit a contact form, your website has failed a basic business job. Knowing how to test website accessibility helps you find those barriers before they cost calls, appointments, sales, and confidence in your company.

Accessibility is not a decorative feature to bolt on after launch. It is part of how a professional website works. For Long Island businesses that depend on service inquiries, online bookings, retail orders, patient information, or public communication, the stakes are real. A broken accessibility experience can also create unnecessary legal exposure. Bad move. Test the site, document the issues, and fix them correctly.

What Website Accessibility Testing Really Checks

Website accessibility testing asks a straightforward question: can people with different abilities use the website to complete its important tasks? That includes visitors who use keyboards instead of a mouse, screen readers, voice control, browser zoom, magnification, captions, or different contrast settings.

A useful test does not stop at whether a page has an accessibility statement or whether a software scan gives a passing score. Automated tools are helpful, but they cannot determine whether a menu is confusing, whether image descriptions are meaningful, or whether a form error tells a visitor what to do next. A website needs both machine checks and real-world testing.

Start by identifying the pages that make money or deliver essential information. For a local service company, that may be the home page, service pages, contact form, scheduling tool, location page, and payment page. For a museum, school, or hospitality business, it may include event calendars, ticketing, downloadable documents, room booking, and maps. Test those paths first. Do not spend hours polishing a minor page while your main inquiry form is impossible to complete.

Test the website with only a keyboard

Unplugging the mouse is one of the fastest ways to expose trouble. Use the Tab key to move through links, buttons, form fields, menus, pop-ups, and checkout controls. Use Shift + Tab to move backward. Use Enter or the Spacebar to activate controls, and use arrow keys when a menu or selection control calls for them.

Every interactive item should receive a visible focus indicator. That is the outline or highlight that shows exactly where the keyboard user is on the page. If the focus disappears, gets trapped inside a pop-up, jumps around unpredictably, or lands on hidden items, visitors can get stuck.

Test the complete customer path, not just the top navigation. Can someone choose a service, open a menu, select a date, complete every required field, review an error, and submit the form without touching a mouse? If not, the issue is not theoretical. It is blocking business.

Check page structure with a screen reader

Screen readers convert page content and controls into spoken information or Braille output. Common options include NVDA on Windows, JAWS in many office environments, and VoiceOver on Apple devices. You do not need to become a screen reader expert to catch major failures, but a basic test is essential.

Start at the top of the page and listen. Does the page title tell the visitor where they are? Do headings describe the sections in a logical order? Can you identify navigation, main content, and footer areas? Does each button announce what it does?

Pay special attention to image descriptions. An image that communicates information needs useful alternative text. “Image” or a random file name is worthless. A photo of a business owner may need only a short description, while a chart, floor plan, or product image may require more detail elsewhere on the page. Decorative images should not create extra noise for screen reader users.

Also listen for vague links and buttons. “Click here,” “read more,” and “submit” may make sense visually when surrounded by text, but they can become confusing when a screen reader lists controls out of context. “View plumbing repair services” or “Send your appointment request” gives the visitor a clear destination.

Review color, contrast, zoom, and reflow

Low-contrast text is a common failure, especially on promotional websites using pale gray copy, video backgrounds, and colorful buttons. Check body text, navigation labels, form hints, icons, error messages, and text placed over images. If the message is hard to read in normal conditions, it will be much harder for many visitors.

Use a contrast checker for a fast measurement, then look at the actual page. A technically acceptable color combination may still be a poor choice if the type is too small or the background changes behind it. Marketing design must support the message, not fight it.

Next, zoom the browser to 200 percent and beyond. The website should still let users read content and operate controls without requiring side-to-side scrolling on ordinary pages. Test on a phone as well. Mobile accessibility is not separate from website accessibility. Small screens magnify weak tap targets, crowded forms, floating chat windows, and hidden navigation problems.

Test forms, errors, and time-sensitive actions

Forms are where many websites lose leads. Every field needs a visible label that is connected properly for assistive technology. Placeholder text inside a box is not an adequate replacement because it disappears when the visitor starts typing.

Submit the form with a required field blank and with an invalid email address. Do the errors clearly explain what is wrong? Are they announced to a screen reader? Does the page move focus to the problem, or does it leave the visitor searching for an error message somewhere above? Strong error handling is good customer service for everyone.

If your website uses a booking system, shopping cart, donation tool, portal, or third-party payment feature, test those systems too. A polished main website cannot compensate for an inaccessible scheduling or checkout experience. Third-party tools are often the weak link, and the answer may be configuration, a vendor fix, or replacing the tool altogether.

Check video, audio, PDFs, and moving content

Video can sell a service brilliantly, but only when visitors can understand it. Provide accurate captions for spoken content, identify meaningful sounds when needed, and include a transcript when it adds practical value. Do not rely on auto-generated captions without reviewing them. Incorrect captions can change the meaning of a professional message fast.

Audio-only content needs a text alternative. Videos with visual instructions, demonstrations, charts, or on-screen text may need audio description or a written equivalent. If a commercial says, “Call the number on screen,” the number must also be available as real text on the page.

Test downloadable PDFs separately. A scanned document that looks fine but has no readable text, headings, tags, or logical reading order can be unusable with assistive technology. The same applies to menus, applications, brochures, event programs, and policy documents. When possible, place critical information in an accessible web page rather than hiding it only inside a file.

Animation, carousels, and auto-playing media deserve a hard review. Moving content should not distract from essential tasks, start unexpectedly with sound, or prevent a visitor from pausing it. Production flair has a place. Control belongs to the user.

Use Automated Scans Without Trusting Them Blindly

Accessibility scanners can flag missing alternative text, insufficient contrast, empty buttons, form-label issues, and some structural mistakes. Run a scan on key templates and high-traffic pages, then use the results as a repair list. This is a smart first pass, particularly after a redesign or content update.

But a scanner cannot tell whether the alternative text is accurate, whether heading order makes sense, or whether a visitor can understand a complicated form. It also cannot test every custom widget, modal window, embedded map, or third-party feature the way a person can. A clean scan is not a clean bill of health.

The strongest process combines automated scanning, keyboard checks, screen reader testing, visual review, and testing by people who use assistive technology in their everyday lives. For a larger organization, an independent accessibility audit can provide clearer documentation and a prioritized remediation plan. For a smaller business, start with the pages and actions customers use most, then work through the rest systematically.

Fix Problems in the Right Order

Not every issue carries the same urgency. A missing image description on a decorative photo is different from a keyboard trap that prevents a visitor from booking an appointment. Prioritize barriers that stop a user from navigating, understanding core information, submitting a form, paying, scheduling, or getting help.

Keep a simple record of each issue: the page or feature, what happens, who is affected, the recommended correction, who owns the fix, and when it was retested. This prevents accessibility work from becoming a one-time scramble. It also gives your web team, marketing staff, and technology providers a shared checklist.

Test again after every major site update. New videos, plug-ins, online forms, theme changes, tracking tools, and third-party integrations can introduce problems without warning. Accessibility is maintenance work, much like security, hosting, backups, and software updates.

A website should welcome the customer who is ready to call, buy, book, learn, or visit – not put another obstacle in front of them. Put accessibility testing into your regular website maintenance schedule, and make every important path work before the next customer arrives.
